Arequipa is often considered as the most beautiful Peruvian city and this is not only due to its beautiful historical centre, but also to the landscape around it. Across Arequipa and Moquegua departments is located the National Reserve of Salinas & Aguada Blanca, a wonderful natural park that makes Southern Peru a really interesting area to visit.
This National Reserve was created in 1979 with the aim of preserving local flora and fauna as well as the unique rock formations that characterize this immense slice of paradise. The area is more than 360.000 hectares large and it is characterized by endless high plains as well as by an outstanding volcano range whose highest point gets to more than 6.000 meters. The local flora and fauna are typical of the Andes and it won’t be hard for you to spot wild vicuñas, llamas, as well as guanacos and alpacas while visiting the area.
Salinas & Aguada Blanca Natural Reserve is the perfect place to take part in some adventure and fun activities while staying in Arequipa. There are loads of unpaved bike trails starting from the bottom either of Michi or Chachani mountain and then continuing through these virgin and isolated lands. The bravest visitors can even attempt the climb of one of the volcanoes mentioned above whereas if you are looking for a more quiet tour in this park, there are many viewpoints from which you will be able to enjoy the majestic panorama to its fullest extent.
Locals living in the reserve still preserve their ancient tradition and wisdom. They are welcoming and friendly and make all visitors feel at home when they meet them. This natural reserve is evidence of how rich Peru is from a cultural, historical and natural point of view.
